Residing in North County San Diego, Kay Lim aka K.Limonade, is a self taught, multi medium Filipina American artist. Influenced by cartoons, Kay’s work involves experimenting with different colors and shapes by morphing realistic figures into distorted, whimsical characters.
With a Bachelors of Science in Public Health, she strives to apply her artistic skills and public health knowledge to advocate for human rights by educating the public on social issues through the use of her art.
Kay is currently working on a new collection focusing on her experience as a Filipina woman growing up in the United States. Her new work showcases fun and colorful, morphed women characters that signifies the challenges of assimilation while trying to stay true to her roots.
The use of different colors portrays how the role of American beauty standards and Eurocentric features has affected a young Filipina by questioning her own beauty. Morphing the shape of the women characters symbolizes the impact of needing to assimilate into American society by fitting into a box and hiding her Filipino culture. But the desire to be her authentic self begins to outgrow these false narratives and finally embraces her true self.
Although Kay’s new work seems fun and colorful, it displays how many children of immigrants struggle to balance two cultures by hiding behind an American version of themselves.
Stay tuned for new work. Coming soon!
